Assessment

These shots were all taken before I stripped the bike right down and started a full assessment of the state of things.

The turbo saddle is not original but of the period so I think I'll have a go at cleaning this and see how it comes up.

No rips or major scuff marks.

Super Record seatpost looking very dirty but hopefully not too bad.  It was loose in the box but it looks as though it had been pushed quite low in the seat tube.

Dia Compe Gran Compe aero levers will go.  I have a set of 90s Campagnolo Record levers with white hoods that are just lying around, but I would like to get 80s levers with gum hoods.

I have always preferred the smooth surface of the Record levers over the drilled surface of the Super Record levers.

The major problem I will face is how to repair this broken dropout.  Ideally I will repair it rather than replace it but that is going to take a bit of research.  I've seen them welded but I have no experience of that myself so I don't know how successful that is.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Guerciotti star cut out from under the bottom bracket - that is class.

Some rust around the down tube and everything really dirty, but hopefully some of that dirt and grease has protected the paint.

Showing extent of rust on underside of the downtube.

Paint or grease or something dribbled onto the DS chainstay.  A bit of surface rust on the chrome.

Rust and dirt but cable stop still in good condition.

Underside of DS chainstay showing extensive rust.
The decals have taken quite a beating.

Something I always thought was strange about the Guerciotti was the lack of clear coat over the decals.  This has meant that they were exposed to any minor scratches or rubbing.

Originally yellow they have faded to white.  Thinking about replacing these???

The original bulletproof GP4 rims.  I trained many many miles on these and raced them on rough open roads.  They are still true.

For smoother surfaces and criteriums I used a set of wheels I made with Fiamme Ergal rims (290g each!) and Omas hubs with straight 17 gauge spokes.  Very light.

Forks covered in light surface rust.

Super Record rear derailleur covered in dirt and grime but looking in excellent condition.

Record brakes look dull and dirty but no damage and all the small parts look to be original.  All bolts and nuts look corroded and the brake pads are well worn, but nothing to worry about here.

Cranks and chainrings in very good condition.  Getting the bottom bracket out might be a mission.

record front hub in need of a clean and repack.

The rear hub is missing so I'll be trawling ebay for one of those.

 The scrunched up decal.

Typical of the rust spotting the frame in various places.  Needs to be cleaned and sealed from further damage.

The Record rear hub has been replaced with a Suntour Superbe Pro.  The poor man's Campagnolo Record, Superbe was a great range of components and the hubset was one of the best of it's time, but it is not original so it will have to step aside.

Back of read derailleur showing the extent of grime that has accumulated.

This is a bit of a concern as cable guides can hide some deep rust.  Will need careful inspection.

More rust :(

Time spent on unpack and assessment = 2 hours
