Cleaning Components

The work table.

All alloy parts are cleaned using Autosol and a lot of rubbing.
Steel parts are cleaned using 220 grit sandpaper and Autosol, gently rubbing until the paste stops turning brown from the rust.  Then back to Autosol without the sandpaper for the final polish.

If you don't know about Autosol Metal Cleaner have a look here and do yourself a favour and get some.

Campagnolo Record brake calliper before cleaning.  I was most concerned about the centre bolt nut and anchor bolt because they were quite heavily corroded.  They cleaned up quite well with the sandpaper and Autosol, but probably the worst for wear was this little dude ...

... the cable adjuster.

Before ...

... and after.  Looks nearly new.

So this is one calliper finished.  The steel parts, while totally free of rust, do look aged, but the alloy parts are like new.

Every part was polished and the parts that move in contact with another (eg centre bolt washers) was given a thin coat of Campagnolo grease.

One cleaned and one uncleaned calliper.

Time on one calliper = 3 hours
Total time to date = 8 hours.
