Disassembly

How do you safely extract a crank after thirty years of neglect?

  Use Campagnolo tools :)

Wiping away some of the grime from the 42T chainring.

Here's a photo for the boys at campyonly.com

This bottom bracket has not been touched for thirty years and I opened it to see this.  Grease looking like it was put in yesterday.  No water or grit.  Bearing perfectly smooth and cups clear of any pitting.

A few months ago I stripped down a Chorus freehub that was about 20 years old and the bearing surfaces looked brand new.

How am I supposed to reach that bolt?

Never throw away old tools.  This is a spanner I rescued from a junk shop.  It was originally designed for an Imperial typewriter but it looked sort of bike-useful.

Here it is squeezing onto this inaccessible 8mm bolt - perfect fit!

Forks before and after rubbing with my fav cleaner.

Time spent on strip-down = 3 hours
Total time to date = 5 hours
